Useful distinction: familiar contexts can support relevance, but a familiar context is not the same thing as formal curriculum alignment.
Why context matters
Australian Curriculum Mathematics describes mathematics learning in ways that include connecting ideas to familiar experiences and objects in students’ lives. In practice, a teacher may use a context students recognise to make a problem easier to enter without changing the underlying mathematical idea.

What a familiar-context adaptation can do
- Replace generic objects with familiar or motivating objects.
- Use an interest-based actor or location where it makes sense.
- Provide a clearer story setting for a word problem.
- Support discussion by connecting a mathematical idea to something students already know.
What it cannot prove
An AI-personalised worksheet is not automatically “Australian Curriculum aligned”. Formal alignment requires a teacher or system to identify the relevant curriculum content and ensure the task actually addresses it. PWG starts from a teacher-selected worksheet and personalises context; it does not certify curriculum alignment.
A safer planning sequence
- Select the curriculum-relevant learning intention.
- Choose a source task that addresses that intention.
- Decide whether a familiar context is useful for the learner or class.
- Personalise the context without changing the mathematical demand.
- Review the result against the source task and lesson intention.
