Personalisation and differentiation can overlap, but they are not synonyms. Changing a problem context around a student’s interests can affect relevance and engagement. Differentiation can involve changes to challenge, support, representation, pacing or teaching based on learning need.
What interest-based personalisation changes
Interest personalisation typically changes contextual elements such as names, objects, actors, places and optional illustrations. A subtraction problem may move from a generic shop context to roadworks or animals while retaining the same quantities and mathematical demand.
What differentiation may change
AITSL Professional Standard for Teachers Focus Area 1.5 addresses differentiating teaching to meet specific learning needs across the full range of abilities. Depending on the teaching decision, that can involve scaffolding, representation, task complexity, grouping, feedback or additional support.

Where the approaches can work together
A teacher might keep the same curriculum task but use a familiar context for one student, a visual representation for another, and additional scaffolding for a third. In that lesson, personalisation is one part of a broader differentiation decision rather than a replacement for it.
Questions to ask before changing a worksheet
- What is the exact mathematical learning intention?
- Am I changing context, challenge, support, or more than one of these?
- Does every student still have access to the intended mathematics?
- Could the chosen interest distract from or complicate the problem?
- What will I check after generation?
